According to ynet, sardine sales have jumped between 38% and 72% over the past year, driven by influencers promoting sardines as a rich source of protein, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and skin benefits. This trend is especially popular among fitness enthusiasts, protein consumers, and beauty influencers, focusing mainly on canned sardines but also boosting demand for fresh sardines.
Retailers report that this once "sleepy" product has become highly sought after, although sardine sales still do not match those of tuna. Importers also note a sharp rise in demand, particularly for sardines packed in water, which are favored by athletes. Alongside the surge in demand, prices have increased substantially over the last two years, with some sardine products rising by tens of percent. Currently, canned sardines typically sell for between 5 and 12 shekels depending on brand, can size, oil type, and promotions. Fresh sardines are significantly more expensive, reaching up to about 80 shekels per kilogram.
