Russian Forces Accidentally Shoot Down Own Ka-52 Attack Helicopter Amid Drone Attack Chaos
In early July, during a Ukrainian drone assault over Russia's Voronezh region, Russian forces mistakenly shot down one of their own advanced Ka-52 "Alligator" attack helicopters. The incident occurred when a mobile missile unit from Russian reserve forces fired a Verba shoulder-launched missile intended to target a Ukrainian drone. However, the missile's guidance system locked onto the helicopter's hot engine exhaust instead, which was much stronger than the drone's signature.
The helicopter crashed, killing the pilot instantly. Although the co-pilot ejected and survived with injuries, reports indicate the pilot's ejection system malfunctioned, preventing his escape. Russian military blogger Vladimir Romanov criticized the mishap, highlighting severe organizational and training deficiencies within Russia's mobile air defense units. He noted that while some units are skilled, others consist of minimally trained volunteers who fire indiscriminately, leading to tragic friendly fire incidents.
This marks the fifth time Russia has accidentally downed its own aircraft during the ongoing conflict, underscoring the intense pressure and disorder within the Russian air defense system facing increasing Ukrainian drone threats. The event adds to the broader challenges Russia faces in countering unmanned aerial attacks effectively.
