Ohio Family Faces Over 100 Years in Prison for Severe Child Neglect of 16 Children
Authorities in Vinton County, Ohio, have arrested four family members on charges of severe child neglect involving 16 children found living in squalid conditions. The children, aged between 18 months and 18 years, were discovered confined to a single 13-square-meter room filled with human waste and garbage. The suspects include Elizabeth Siders, 33, and Gary Siders Jr., along with Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders. Elizabeth and Gary Jr. were reportedly married in 2008 when she was 15 and he was 18.
Records obtained by WOWK 13 revealed that Elizabeth gave birth to conjoined twins in November 2022, who died shortly after birth. The children found in the home were reportedly isolated, unregistered for school, and many had developmental delays, with the eldest child unable to write her name. Some children were in critical condition after rescue, with two airlifted to trauma centers and one requiring ventilation.
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Kane stated that the children were kept in worse conditions than the family’s livestock. The case is described as "intrafamilial," as it remains unclear if Elizabeth and Gary Jr. are the biological parents of all the children. The suspects have pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of child endangerment and face bail set at $300,000 each. If convicted, they could face up to 192 years in prison.
Family members expressed shock and concern for the children’s welfare, with relatives stating they were unaware of the full extent of the family’s size and the abuse until the arrests. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure the children’s safety and well-being.
