IOC Eases Restrictions on Russian Athletes Ahead of 2028 Olympics Qualifiers
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has relaxed the eligibility conditions for Russian athletes and teams participating in the qualifying events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This move includes temporarily lifting the suspension imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee since October 2023. The original suspension was enacted after the Russian Olympic Committee incorporated regional sports councils from territories occupied in Ukraine. The IOC clarified that the grounds for the suspension are no longer valid. However, the committee has not yet authorized Russian athletes and teams to compete under their national flag and anthem. The IOC stated that a decision on this matter will be made "at the appropriate time."
