Israeli Student Union Demands Role in National Decision-Making Amid War Challenges

The National Student Union of Israel met with President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday to demand greater involvement of youth representatives in public policy decision-making. The meeting, held at the President's Residence in Jerusalem as part of the "Changing the Conversation" initiative, focused on expanding resilience centers and increasing budgets to address war-related damages affecting students.

The student representatives presented a comprehensive plan calling for increased funding for mental health support, expansion of resilience centers in higher education institutions, and enhanced cooperation with the Council for Higher Education and the Planning and Budgeting Committee. Their goal is to move from temporary support measures to establishing permanent mechanisms that grant young people direct influence over state decisions.

This demand stems from a growing frustration among youth over bearing a disproportionate share of national burdens, including extended reserve military service, academic burnout, and rising living costs, while lacking representation in government bodies. Sivan Koren, Chair of the Student Union, emphasized that those who carry the national burden must have a seat at the decision-making table, stating, "We are not just asking to be talked about, we want to be partners in shaping Israel's future."

President Herzog expressed support for the students' demands, acknowledging the complex realities they face, including repeated reserve call-ups, loss, and economic and academic uncertainty. He stressed the need to develop tailored resources for them. However, implementing these demands depends on budget reallocations and approvals from the Ministry of Finance and the Council for Higher Education.

The meeting highlights the students' push for systemic change to ensure their voices are heard in shaping policies that directly impact their lives amid ongoing national challenges.
