Ram Emanuel Criticizes Netanyahu, Calls for Major Shift in US-Israel Relations

Ram Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff and potential US presidential candidate, is set to deliver a speech at Tel Aviv University on Wednesday sharply criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Emanuel will argue that the US-Israel relationship is at a critical crossroads and cannot continue as it has. He insists significant changes and a new direction are necessary to preserve the alliance's strength.

In a preview interview with the Associated Press, Emanuel described Israel's military response to the Hamas attack on October 7 as "reckless and negligent" regarding Palestinian lives. He accused Israel of using food and medicine as military tools. On allegations of genocide, Emanuel said the issue should be discussed in the context of other global conflicts like Ukraine and Sudan, warning against politicizing the term and weakening its meaning.

Emanuel will contend that Netanyahu has led Israel into a dead end, supported by flawed American leadership decisions. He criticized longstanding US policy for blindly backing the Israeli government without conditions or demands, calling it a mistake that enabled Netanyahu to ignore US strategic concerns. Emanuel plans to propose measures against Israel, including sanctions on Israelis attacking Palestinian civilians and property, as well as on companies and banks supporting settlements.

He also advocates ending US subsidies to Israel's defense budget, arguing Israel should purchase American weapons on the same terms as other US allies. Emanuel's speech signals a call for a fundamental reassessment of US policy toward Israel amid ongoing regional tensions.
