Trump Meets Erdogan in Turkey, Discusses NATO, Israel, and F-35 Fighter Jets

U.S. President Donald Trump held his first meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara ahead of the NATO summit. Trump emphasized that his attendance at the summit was solely due to Erdogan's personal invitation, highlighting their strong relationship. He praised Erdogan as a great leader and acknowledged Turkey's growing military power.

During their joint statement, Trump criticized NATO members for not supporting the U.S. adequately, expressing disappointment with European countries like Italy, Germany, France, and the UK. He suggested the possibility of reducing U.S. troop presence in Europe, questioning why America should defend allies who do not reciprocate support.

The leaders also discussed the sensitive issue of resuming the sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Turkey. Trump said the decision would be considered, noting the jets are the best by far and that many support completing the deal. Erdogan reminded that the U.S. had previously committed to delivering five jets, reaffirming past promises.

Additionally, Trump mentioned plans to talk about trade and regional security issues, including Israel and Iran, during their discussions. The meeting set the tone for cooperation amid tensions within NATO and ongoing geopolitical challenges in the region.
