Volcanic Eruption Strands Whoopi Goldberg on Sicily Amid Travel Disruptions
Whoopi Goldberg, the American actress and host of The View, was stranded in Sicily due to a powerful eruption of Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Goldberg had been vacationing in Sicily and was scheduled to return to the United States by Monday to resume hosting her show. However, the eruption on June 26 forced the closure of local airports, delaying her and many other tourists, including Israelis, from leaving the island.
During the broadcast of The View, co-host Joy Behar filled in for Goldberg, who sent a recorded message explaining the situation to viewers. Goldberg described spending the day trying to return home but being unable to due to the airport closures caused by the volcanic ash and gas cloud. She humorously noted that while many people have unique vacation experiences, hers was particularly memorable.
Mount Etna, standing approximately 3,300 meters tall on Sicily's eastern coast, frequently erupts with lava flows, ash emissions, and explosive activity. The recent eruption produced a massive ash and hot gas plume, prompting the evacuation of dozens of tourists. Authorities confirmed that all tourists were safely evacuated. The incident disrupted travel plans and highlighted the challenges faced by travelers during natural disasters.
