Walmart Cuts Prices on Thousands of Items as Trump Claims Credit
Walmart announced significant price reductions on thousands of products to help consumers cope with years of inflation. The discounts focus on popular summer items such as ground beef, sauces, and soft drinks. For example, ground beef for hamburgers was lowered by 12%, cherry prices were halved, and a 24-pack of cola cans dropped by one-third. The retailer also cut prices on household goods, toys, clothing, and other items.
Former President Donald Trump praised Walmart's move on social media, calling it a "big story for American consumers" and labeling Walmart a "patriotic" retailer. He claimed the price cuts followed a request he made. The rising cost of living in the U.S. has become a key issue ahead of the November midterm elections, especially after the consumer price index rose 4.2% over the past year, compared to 3% at the start of Trump's second term. Beef prices, which surged 12% in May year-over-year, have drawn particular criticism.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump recently instructed his senior advisors, including Peter Navarro and Stephen Miller, to find ways to lower prices. Walmart stated its price cuts aim to help customers and club members make the most of the summer season but did not mention Trump in its official statement. The retailer has generally benefited from inflation under Trump, attracting more middle- and upper-income shoppers seeking deals. This price reduction marks a shift from last year when Walmart warned tariffs would raise prices, a stance that drew criticism from Trump, who urged the company to absorb costs rather than pass them on to consumers.
