Google Maps to Integrate AI Agent for Streamlined Food Delivery Orders

Google is testing a new feature that integrates an artificial intelligence agent directly into its Google Maps app to simplify ordering food deliveries. This upgrade aims to allow users to complete the entire ordering process within the familiar navigation interface, eliminating the need to switch to separate delivery apps or call restaurants. The AI agent will understand users' food preferences, suggest favorite places, and manage the order so the food is ready upon arrival.

The feature builds on Google's existing Ask Maps tool, launched earlier this year and powered by the Gemini AI model. Code discovered in the latest beta version of Google Maps reveals prompts encouraging users to express their cravings and discover preferred dining spots, with the system promising to place orders even while users are on the move. Google has officially confirmed plans to enable food ordering through direct conversations within Maps in the coming months, reflecting a broader vision of turning its products into "active agents" capable of making physical purchases for users.

However, many technical details remain unclear. The beta version currently lacks integrated payment systems or detailed menu selection interfaces. It is also uncertain whether Google will connect directly to restaurants' ordering systems or rely on existing delivery services. Additionally, initial availability may be limited to select devices, similar to previous Gemini-powered features exclusive to Pixel phones.

While the presence of the code does not guarantee an immediate public release, industry expectations suggest a possible launch alongside the Pixel 11 series in August. This development could set a new standard for AI personal assistants by enabling seamless, automated food ordering within a navigation app.
