Knesset Legal Advisor Warns Torah Study Law May Require Equal Benefits for Yeshiva Students
During a Knesset committee discussion on the Basic Law for Torah Study on July 7, 2026, Knesset legal advisor Sagit Afik cautioned that the law might compel granting yeshiva students the same benefits currently given to IDF soldiers. Afik emphasized the need to explicitly state in the law that it is declarative only, to avoid legal obligations such as providing yeshiva students with scholarships equivalent to those for military service, educational stipends, land discounts, and other benefits. She warned that without clear wording, the law could create a precedent requiring equal treatment between Torah learners and IDF servicemen, potentially impacting state resources and policies.
