Israel U20 Handball Team Begins European Championship Campaign in Romania
The Israel Under-20 handball team is set to start its European Championship journey on Wednesday in the Romanian cities of Cluj and Turda. The team aims to finish among the top 14 to qualify for the upcoming World Championship for the first time. The squad departed for Romania on Tuesday evening, missing one of its key players, Guy Resh Arman, who will play in Germany next season. Despite this, the team is confident after strong preparation, including two victories over Greece, another tournament participant.
Israel will face tough opponents in the group stage, starting with reigning European champions Sweden on Wednesday at noon, followed by Bosnia on Thursday at the same time, and host nation Romania on Saturday at 5 p.m. For the first time, all matches will be broadcast live on Sport Channel. Coach Chen Pomerantz expressed cautious optimism, highlighting the team's good form after a lengthy break and significant progress over the past year and a half. He acknowledged the challenge of playing against the European champions but believes the team can perform well and build confidence from the opening match.
Pomerantz described the group as difficult but sees potential to surprise and advance. He emphasized the importance of progressing game by game while focusing on individual player development. The coaching staff includes assistant coach Evitar Gevaon, goalkeeper coach Pedro Silva, physiotherapist Eyal Amar, psychologist Roy Yablonchik, equipment manager Dor Moshe, and delegation head Gilad Natan. The roster features captains Tal Ekstein and Asaf Sharon among other promising players.
The team’s clear goal is to qualify for the World Championship, with Pomerantz stating that if circumstances align, they could aim even higher. The championship matches will provide a critical test of the team’s growth and readiness against strong European competition.
