Gal Rubin Reveals Alopecia Diagnosis Triggered by Stress After Big Brother Win
A week after winning the reality show Big Brother, Gal Rubin disclosed on her Instagram story that she has been suffering from alopecia areata, a condition causing patchy hair loss. She revealed that the hair loss began about a month ago due to stress but noted that her condition is improving. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to localized hair loss, typically on the scalp but sometimes affecting eyebrows, eyelashes, and other body areas.
Dr. Lahavit Ackerman, a dermatologist, explained that alopecia can affect both men and women at any age and often appears suddenly. While the disease usually causes limited hair loss, there are more severe forms such as alopecia totalis (loss of all scalp hair) and alopecia universalis (loss of all body hair). Stress is frequently observed near the onset of the disease but is not a direct cause; it can act as a trigger in genetically or immunologically predisposed individuals.
Diagnosis is generally clinical, sometimes aided by dermoscopy, and occasionally blood tests are done to exclude other autoimmune conditions. Treatments vary depending on the extent and duration of hair loss and may include local steroid injections, light therapy, and advanced immune-modulating drugs. Early treatment often leads to significant hair regrowth.
Dr. Ackerman emphasized the emotional impact of alopecia, noting that visible hair loss can severely affect self-esteem and quality of life. She praised Rubin’s openness for raising awareness and reducing stigma around the condition, encouraging others to seek early diagnosis and treatment. "Alopecia areata is a medical condition, not just an aesthetic issue," she said, highlighting the availability of effective therapies today.
