Netflix Revives Classic 'Little House on the Prairie' with 2026 Adaptation
Netflix is releasing a new adaptation of the classic 1935 novel "Little House on the Prairie" in 2026, starring Australian actor Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls. The story follows a 19th-century American pioneer family navigating hardships while holding onto their love for each other, a timeless theme Bracey emphasizes. The series is based on the real experiences of Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder, whose childhood inspired the original books published in the 1930s and 1940s.
This new version revisits the pioneer family’s life with a focus on settler-colonialist and Indigenous narratives. Alongside Bracey, Alice Holzer plays Laura Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald portrays Caroline, Laura’s mother, and Skywalker Yuz plays Mary, Laura’s older sister. Holzer reflected on the historical challenges Laura faced as a girl in the 19th century, noting the limited rights and educational opportunities for girls compared to boys at the time.
Created and written by Rebecca Sonnenschein, the eight-episode series has already been renewed for a second season before the first season’s premiere. Skywalker Yuz expressed excitement about continuing to create memorable moments with the show. The series will debut on Netflix on Thursday.
The story has been adapted before, most notably in the 1970s NBC television series that aired until 1983, with its first season recently available on the Israeli streaming service HOT.
