Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan claimed today (Thursday) at a press conference he held in Sofia alongside the Bulgarian foreign minister that the escalation between the U.S. and Iran harmed the momentum of the contacts between the sides, although in his words they had until recently been close to a deal.

According to him, "Until the last few days, the negotiations had in fact reached the stage where only a few sentences remained unresolved in certain parts of the text. With the remaining points completed, we sincerely believed that an agreement would soon be reached."

However, in his version, the exchange of blows between Washington and Tehran changed the picture. "We saw that the mutual attacks that began two days ago carried a risk of escalation," he said. "This is a real reason for concern for us."

As a reminder, U.S. Central Command issued an official statement overnight confirming that its forces completed a series of powerful self-defense strikes across Iran last night. The strikes are defined by the Pentagon as a direct and lethal response to Iran's ongoing and unjustified aggression, especially after the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter earlier this week.
