IDF Warns Israeli Government of Risks from Reducing Mandatory Service to 30 Months

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have presented the government with a detailed report outlining the serious consequences of shortening mandatory military service from 32 to 30 months. This reduction is set to take effect in a few months unless altered by legislation or a special order. The IDF warns that the cut would lead to a significant drop in manpower and increased operational risks, including shortened training periods for officers and non-commissioned officers, potentially compromising leadership quality.

A senior security official told Channel 12 that the political leadership cannot remain indifferent to the IDF's concerns. The military regards the reduction as a red line due to its impact on combat readiness. Efforts are underway to persuade government members to reconsider the decision. If unchanged, the new service length will begin in January, with all associated risks.

Additionally, the IDF is preparing to issue immediate reserve duty summons (Order 8) to discharged soldiers amid severe manpower shortages, which would extend active service by two months. This exceptional measure aims to meet the army's operational demands but would triple the state's costs per reservist and cause significant strain on reservists. A senior IDF official criticized this approach as unreasonable and inappropriate in a democratic country, highlighting the burden of extended reserve duty.
