French President Macron Makes Historic Visit to Syria, First EU Leader Since Assad Regime's Fall
French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Syria on Monday evening for a historic visit, where he was welcomed by Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad. This marks the first visit by a European Union leader to Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime and only the second visit by any European leader, following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Macron's visit is also the first by a French president to Damascus since Nicolas Sarkozy's trip in 2009 during Bashar al-Assad's early rule. France had severed diplomatic ties with Syria after the Assad regime's violent crackdown on civilians during the Arab Spring protests.
