Former Israeli Supreme Court Presidents Warn Government Against Defying Court Rulings
Five former presidents of the Israeli Supreme Court issued a strong statement on Monday condemning the government’s announcement that it will not comply with a Supreme Court ruling regarding the Second Authority for Television and Radio Council. The former justices warned that disregarding court decisions represents "the final nail in the coffin of democracy." They argued that such defiance severely disrupts the balance of governance and the rule of law in Israel, leading to anarchy and the concentration of all governmental powers in a single body, which would undermine proper democratic functioning.
The statement emphasized the necessity for the government to uphold judicial rulings to prevent this destructive outcome. The letter was signed by former Supreme Court presidents Aharon Barak, Dorit Beinisch, Asher Grunis, Esther Hayut, and Uzi Fogelman.
