Car Insurance Prices Drop Significantly in Israel After Years of Increases

After years of continuous rises, car insurance prices in Israel have finally started to decline. According to the Wobi index for the second quarter of 2026, prices fell by about 20% compared to their peak in the second quarter of 2025, with an 11% drop recorded in June 2026 compared to June 2025. The main reductions were seen in comprehensive insurance policies, while mandatory liability insurance actually increased by around 4%.

Several factors contributed to this reversal, including a halt in rising spare parts costs, a decrease in vehicle usage influenced by the ongoing war, and a sharp decline in car thefts. Data from the Israeli Police cited by Wobi shows a 20% drop in thefts, with Ilan Goldstein, CEO of Pointer, noting an even steeper 33% decrease in the last quarter compared to the previous year. He attributed this to heightened security measures and military presence in areas like Judea and Samaria.

Price reductions vary by car model, with popular vehicles such as Hyundai Venue and Toyota RAV4 seeing decreases of about 29%, Mazda 3 down 25%, and Mitsubishi Space Star down 21%. Some models, like the Peugeot 208 and Seat Leon, experienced slight price increases. Chief economist Chen Herzog from BDO explained that families with two cars could save between 1,000 and 1,500 shekels annually. He advised consumers to consider switching insurers or renegotiating policies but to be mindful of early termination penalties.

However, not all drivers will benefit equally; younger drivers, those with claims histories, or residents in high-theft areas may see smaller reductions or continue to face high premiums.
