Brothers in Arms Urges Israeli Broadcasting Council to Uphold Supreme Court Ruling Amid Political Pressure
The organization Brothers and Sisters in Arms issued a statement on Monday addressing members of the Second Authority for Television and Radio ahead of their upcoming meeting. The group called on the council to continue operating in accordance with the law and the binding Supreme Court interim order issued on June 22, 2026. This statement follows the Israeli government's decision on July 5, 2026, which Brothers and Sisters in Arms warned could set a dangerous precedent by effectively ignoring a judicial ruling.
The organization emphasized that the interim order remains in effect and legally binding on all state authorities until it is lawfully changed or annulled. It affirmed that the current composition of the Second Authority Council is authorized to continue its work and that council members must exercise independent, professional judgment free from political pressure.
Brothers and Sisters in Arms cautioned that attempts to compel council members to disregard the court order could trigger an unprecedented constitutional crisis, severely undermining the rule of law and media freedom in Israel. The group stated, "When a government effectively asks a public body to ignore a court order, it crosses a dangerous red line. The rule of law is not a recommendation, and Supreme Court decisions bind all state authorities."
The organization urged council members and all public officials facing similar challenges to courageously uphold their public duty, act according to the law, and maintain their independence from political influence. It described their decision as a critical test for the future of Israeli democracy. In related news, a senior minister dismissed rumors that Prime Minister Netanyahu would intervene in this matter.
