Israeli Governance Watchdog to Protest Government's Defiance of Supreme Court Rulings
The Movement for Quality Government in Israel announced a protest for Saturday night at Tel Aviv's Habima Square in response to the government's refusal to recognize decisions made by the Second Authority Council under a Supreme Court injunction. The watchdog group warned that this unprecedented move pits the government directly against the judiciary, threatening democratic norms.
Chairman Dr. Eliad Shraga sharply criticized the government, describing it as "anarchists in suits" who treat the law as a mere recommendation. He emphasized that the rule of law applies first and foremost to the government itself, not just the public. Shraga called on citizens to join the protest at 8 p.m. to assert that no government is above the law and to defend democracy.
The Second Authority Council oversees commercial television and radio broadcasts in Israel, including news channels. The Movement for Quality Government, alongside journalist organizations and media bodies, petitioned the Supreme Court, arguing that the government's selective compliance with council decisions sets a dangerous precedent undermining media oversight and public adherence to the law.
Alongside organizing the protest, the Movement plans to request the Supreme Court to invoke contempt of court procedures to compel the government to comply with the injunction. The group stressed that allowing the government to pick which legal rulings to follow threatens the foundation of Israeli democracy and the rule of law.
