Secular Residents of Arad Escalate Protests Against Gur Hasidic Influence

Secular residents of Arad are intensifying their protests against the Gur Hasidic community's growing influence in the city. Organizers plan to hold a public swearing-in ceremony for opposition council members, aiming to prevent any opposition member who leaves the coalition from being replaced by others joining it, thereby blocking the coalition's survival. Participants will be asked to sign a document committing not to join a coalition dominated by Gur Hasidim. Additionally, protesters intend to demonstrate outside upcoming city council meetings to oppose what they describe as the Hasidic group's takeover of Arad's public space.

One organizer told Walla News that the protest is not about promoting any particular candidate but about reducing Gur Hasidim's political influence in Arad. Meanwhile, a Gur Hasidic resident responded by accusing the secular protesters of hatred toward ultra-Orthodox Jews, stating that their demonstrations target people rather than governance. He acknowledged secular residents' concerns but argued they lack factual basis and emphasized that the Hasidic community has not harmed anyone, despite cultural differences. He also noted that the Gur community has historically been excluded from the city and that their protests have not been directed against neighbors or led to confrontations.
