Reserve Lt. Col. Amit Yagur estimates that the recent American strikes were not intended to sabotage contacts with Tehran, but rather to strengthen Washington’s bargaining position. According to him, concentrating the strikes around the Strait of Hormuz was meant to hit Iran’s main strategic card and make clear that the United States is capable of controlling the world’s most important oil route. Reserve Lt. Col. Amit Yagur, formerly deputy head of the Palestinian arena at the Ministry for Strategic Affairs, said today, Thursday, in an interview with Tal Meir that the recent American strikes against Iranian targets were not intended to break off negotiations with Tehran, but rather to strengthen Washington’s position ahead of them.
Yagur said that most of the targets struck over the past two nights are located around the Strait of Hormuz, and this is no coincidence: "The U.S. is not operating according to the logic of breaking off negotiations, it is not operating according to the logic of changing course. It is operating, at least as I understand it, according to the logic of opening the Strait of Hormuz. This is basically going to blunt the Iranian strategy, which is also supposed to help in the negotiations later on."
The former deputy head of the Palestinian arena said the strikes effectively created a "ring of fire" around Revolutionary Guard facilities in the area of the strait: "Everything surrounding the Strait of Hormuz took a hit," and added that alongside the military targets, the petrochemical plant in Asaluyeh was also struck.
According to him, the purpose of the move is not to force Iran into immediate surrender: "It was not supposed to completely change the Iranian logic in the sense of, 'Okay, we surrender,' but to advance the negotiations in the sense of, 'Soon I am going to take from you the main component, the main sting in your strategy, which is the Strait of Hormuz.'"
Yagur also referred to remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said that about 100 million barrels of oil had been transferred through the area over the past month and a half. "That statement was not made by chance," he said. "It was meant to say, 'I essentially control Hormuz.'"
