Olympic Judoka Peter Palchik Auctions Medal Suit to Support ZAKA Volunteers
Peter Palchik, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo, appeared on Channel 14's "Israel Morning" program to announce a charitable initiative benefiting ZAKA volunteers. Palchik is auctioning the judo suit he wore when winning his bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, with all proceeds going to support ZAKA, an Israeli emergency response organization. He explained that the suit symbolizes his personal struggles, including injuries and setbacks, but emphasized that these hardships pale compared to the traumatic scenes ZAKA volunteers face.
Palchik's connection to ZAKA began after he was invited to give an inspirational lecture to volunteers coping with mental health challenges from their work. Deeply moved by their experiences, he sought a meaningful way to contribute. The judo suit is being offered to the highest bidder, and Palchik personally guarantees its delivery to the purchaser. He also humorously noted that the suit has not been washed since the Paris competition.
Reflecting on his recent retirement from competitive judo, Palchik cited the extraordinary experience at the Olympics alongside his coach Oren Samdaja as a key factor in ending his athletic career. Since retiring, he has founded a philanthropic fund to assist Israeli athletes, drawing on his own early career challenges. Additionally, he will serve as a commentator for the upcoming season of "Ninja Israel." Palchik concluded his interview with a call for unity in Israeli society, urging everyone to contribute to making the country better in small ways that collectively have a broad impact.
