Actor Shafi Marciano Opens Up About Coming Out and Family Struggles in New Web Series

Shafi Marciano, a 38-year-old Israeli actor known for his work at the Habima Theater, has spent nearly 30 years hiding his homosexuality from family, friends, and colleagues. Born and raised in a traditional Mizrahi religious family in Ramla, Marciano struggled with his identity for years, fearing rejection and professional setbacks. Only recently, confident in his identity and living happily with his partner in Bat Yam, he has begun sharing his story through a candid new web series titled "From the Diary of a Proud Ramla Resident." The series aims to support LGBTQ individuals still in the closet and their families by depicting personal and relatable experiences, including military service challenges and societal judgment.

Marciano recalls the painful moment he came out to his mother, describing it as a shock that left his parents devastated and grieving. Despite this, he continues to hope for reconciliation, especially with his father, who has yet to accept his sexuality. Although his mother now accepts his partner and visits them, his parents did not attend his wedding, which was postponed from October 2023 to April 2024 due to the war. The couple's engagement was notably public, with his partner proposing on stage during a pride event.

Before coming out publicly, Marciano hid his true self even on social media, where he gained popularity for provocative lip-sync videos contrasting his childlike voice with his adult appearance. These videos, created with his friend Or Soltani, challenged stereotypes about gay men by portraying diverse identities, including religious and "street" personas.

Marciano emphasizes the importance of living authentically despite societal rejection, stating, "The difficulty of coming out is better than any lie in the world." He hopes his series will encourage others to embrace their truth and reduce the suffering caused by concealment. He also expresses a desire to support future generations, saying he would be happy to have a gay child to help guide and support them.

Currently active in multiple theater productions, including upcoming rehearsals for "Yossi and Jagger," Marciano continues to balance his public career with his personal mission to foster understanding and acceptance within Israeli society.
