Israeli Film 'Mama' by Or Sinai and Yevgenia Dodina Premieres Amid Global Challenges
Or Sinai's new feature film "Mama," starring Yevgenia Dodina, is set to premiere next week in Israeli cinemas. The film tells the story of Mila, a foreign worker who has lived in Israel for many years and must return to her family in a small Polish village. This marks the second successful collaboration between Sinai and Dodina, who described the character as complex and challenging to portray. Sinai praised Dodina's performance, noting she carries the entire film.
Filming took place mostly in Poland during summer 2024, a location chosen after the original plans changed due to the war in Ukraine. The crew experienced a warm reception from the local villagers, who eagerly participated as extras and provided meals. Dodina learned Polish for the role to better immerse herself in the environment. The film had its world premiere last year at the Cannes Film Festival and has since been screened at prestigious festivals in Toronto, Warsaw, and Tallinn.
Sinai reflected on the surreal transition from editing to the Cannes red carpet, describing it as overwhelming and exciting. Dodina noted that the Cannes experience felt like living on another planet, a glamorous but detached reality. Both women also discussed the difficulties Israeli filmmakers face internationally today, including political tensions affecting festival participation and personal security concerns. Sinai expressed frustration over being seen as a political symbol rather than an artist.
Dodina shared that international offers have declined, with some contacts withdrawing after learning she is based in Tel Aviv. Despite this, she receives strong appreciation and recognition in Israel, recently honored with tributes at the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Cinematheques. Reflecting on her identity, Dodina said she still finds it moving to be embraced as part of Israeli culture. Sinai and Dodina concluded the interview expressing hope for continued fruitful collaborations.
"Mama" will be screened from July 9 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque and across Israel.
