Atniel Prepares for Fifth 'Different Spirit' Shabbat Amid Historic Housing Expansion
The West Bank settlement of Atniel is gearing up for its fifth annual "Different Spirit" Shabbat on July 10, featuring lessons, workshops, tours, and activities inspired by the ancient Torah center in Dvir and the figure of Caleb son of Jephunneh. This year, the community celebrates a significant milestone: after 13 years of legal battles and opposition from left-wing groups, the Civil Administration approved the settlement's new zoning plan, allowing for 169 new housing units. This approval, achieved with strong support from the local council and the "Emunah" movement, ends a long period in which Atniel could only expand through caravan neighborhoods.
Looking ahead, construction will begin on the new "Nachalat Ami" neighborhood, expected to double the settlement's population. Another major development is the completion of a new, direct, and secure road to historic Dvir, bypassing a nearby Arab village and eliminating the need for special military permits. For the first time, large groups will be able to visit Dvir by bus or bicycle, reconnecting with the site where the ancient sages of the Sanhedrin once studied, as recounted in the Talmud.
Atniel leaders believe that increased public presence at Dvir will help restore the site to Jewish hands, continuing a process already underway in recent years. As part of the Shabbat program, a special tour led by Atniel's council chairman, Rabbi Israel Melamed, will highlight the settlement's transformation from isolation to becoming part of a settlement bloc, including a tenfold expansion of its jurisdiction since its founding in 1982. The event offers a rich schedule of Torah lessons for all ages, Zionist inspiration, and a renewed connection to Jewish history.
Residents and visitors are invited to participate in this unique Shabbat experience celebrating both spiritual growth and historic progress in settlement development.
