US Mint Releases Rare Commemorative Coins for 250th Anniversary Circulation
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, the US Mint is introducing new coin designs and rare editions into public circulation. For the first time since 1945, the traditional Roosevelt dime will be temporarily replaced in 2026 by a special "Emerging Liberty Dime." This coin features an engraving of Lady Liberty with flowing hair and a star-spangled cap on the obverse, and an eagle clutching arrows with the inscription "Liberty Over Tyranny" on the reverse, marking the years 1776-2026. The dime will return to the Roosevelt design in 2027.
Alongside the dime, the Mint is releasing five new quarter designs commemorating key historical events such as the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. Notably, 250,000 quarters with a secret special mark have been randomly mixed into regular bank shipments, creating a rare "treasure hunt" opportunity for the public. These marked quarters will circulate normally, giving everyday transactions the chance to reveal valuable collector’s items.
In addition to coins entering general circulation, the Mint is offering special collector sets priced at $124.50 for 20 coins, including a half-dollar and a dollar coin honoring Native Americans. These sets come with official certificates of authenticity and will not be released into general circulation.
The US Mint’s initiative aims to engage the public in a unique historical celebration while potentially increasing the value of these rare coins among collectors. Citizens and visitors in the US may find these commemorative coins as everyday change, turning routine purchases into exciting discoveries.
