Chinese AI Model GLM-5.2 Rivals OpenAI at One-Sixth the Cost, Gains Global Developer Interest
Chinese startup Z.ai has launched GLM-5.2, an artificial intelligence model that delivers performance comparable to leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic but at roughly one-sixth the cost. The model has attracted significant attention worldwide, especially among developers, for its strong capabilities in code generation and high rankings on performance platforms. David Sacks, former AI advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, praised GLM-5.2 as an open-source Chinese model matching the quality of current OpenAI and Anthropic offerings, estimating it just below Opus 4.8 and at the level of GPT 5.5.
Despite its promising performance and affordability, experts warn that data security concerns and regulatory challenges may limit adoption by American companies, particularly in sensitive sectors such as banking and cybersecurity. Nonetheless, smaller firms and independent developers are increasingly interested in GLM-5.2 due to its cost-effectiveness and competitive capabilities. This development follows a similar disruption last year by Chinese company DeepSeek, which introduced a low-cost, high-performance AI model that shook the AI market.
The emergence of GLM-5.2 highlights growing competition in the global AI landscape, potentially reshaping market dynamics by offering powerful alternatives outside the dominant U.S.-based providers. The model’s open-source nature and affordability could accelerate innovation and accessibility, especially for smaller players worldwide.
