Five Killed in Bomb Blast at Busy Damascus Cafe Amid Rising Security Concerns

At least five people were killed and 16 others injured in a bomb explosion at a crowded cafe in central Damascus, Syria, on Thursday afternoon. The explosive device was reportedly planted inside the cafe near the "Palace of Justice," the city's main courthouse. The blast occurred around 3 p.m. in a busy area of the capital, prompting rapid deployment of ambulances and Syrian security forces who secured the scene. No arrests have been reported, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes with victims lying on the ground and blood everywhere. Nawar Hayat, a local shop owner opposite the courthouse, recounted hearing a loud explosion and seeing people rushing to help. Nearby optician Mohamed Al-Dahabi compared the aftermath to the violence experienced during Syria's civil war.

Such attacks have been relatively rare in Damascus since the regime change in December 2024, when Bashar al-Assad was ousted after over 13 years of civil conflict. The new government is led by Ahmad Al-Shara, a former rebel leader who headed the Islamist coalition that toppled Assad. Despite this, security incidents have persisted, including a car bomb near the Defense Ministry in May 2025 that killed one soldier and injured 18 others, and a deadly suicide bombing at the Greek Orthodox Mar Elias Church in June 2025 that killed 25 and wounded over 60. The latter attack was claimed by a Sunni extremist group, with Syrian authorities blaming ISIS.

In recent months, Syrian authorities have intensified efforts to dismantle ISIS cells and extremist factions in Damascus and its surroundings to prevent a resurgence of large-scale attacks following Assad's fall.
