Bnei David Pre-Military Academy in Eli Shapes Religious Zionist Leadership and IDF Commanders
The Bnei David pre-military academy, located in the settlement of Eli in the Mateh Binyamin Regional Council, is a pioneering educational institution within the Religious Zionist community. Established in 1988 by Rabbis Eli Sadan and Yigal Levinstein, it serves about 140 students annually in its first year, with 90% continuing to the second year. The academy also includes a higher yeshiva and a post-army yeshiva, collectively educating around 600 students and scholars.
Bnei David is ideologically aligned with the "Yeshivot HaKav" movement, emphasizing deep Torah commitment combined with a strong motivation to contribute to Israel’s security and military. Its curriculum integrates Torah study, Jewish thought based on Rabbi Kook’s teachings, and rigorous Talmudic learning, preparing students spiritually and intellectually for service in the IDF and integration into secular Israeli society. The academy operates a unique deferment program allowing students to postpone military service for one or two years to complete their studies, followed by full three-year service. Practical military training, including navigation and basic weapons use, is provided during breaks.
The academy has produced numerous influential figures in the military, media, education, and public sectors. Notable alumni include Central Command Chief Avi Blot, former Mossad head Romem Gofman, and public figures like journalist Itamar Fleishman and former Yesha Council head Yigal Dilmoni. Over 50% of graduates advance to officer training and command roles in the IDF. Tragically, 60 alumni have fallen in service, including decorated soldiers like Lt. Col. Emmanuel Moreno and Captain Roi Klein.
Bnei David’s educational network has expanded to include the Eli higher yeshiva with 300 students, a post-army yeshiva with 150 students, and the Danieli Midrasha for girls in Tapuach, preparing them for significant national service. Additional branches operate in Ma'ale Ephraim and Burqin, establishing Bnei David as a leading religious Zionist educational brand.
The academy regularly hosts lectures and seminars featuring prominent public and military figures, reinforcing its mission to cultivate spiritual leadership within the IDF and Israeli society. In 2016, founder Rabbi Eli Sadan received the Israel Prize for his special contribution to society and the state.
