Netflix Israel Quietly Brings Back 'Friends' and Other Cult Comedies Amid Streaming Competition
Netflix Israel has quietly restored three popular cult comedies to its streaming catalog: the American versions of "Friends," "The Office," and "Community." While the return of "The Office" was announced a few days in advance, "Friends" and "Community" reappeared on the platform with little fanfare in recent days. This move reflects Netflix's strategic shift after years of focusing mainly on original productions, as competing services like HBO Max, Disney Plus, and Prime Video have reclaimed major library series.
"Friends," a 1990s sitcom and one of Netflix Israel's most reliable viewership anchors, had left the platform at the end of 2024 and moved to HBO Max with its launch in Israel. Its unexpected return to Netflix Israel is notable, especially since each of the three series is licensed from different studios, Warner Bros. for "Friends," Universal for "The Office," and Sony for "Community." These are separate deals rather than a bundled acquisition.
This resurgence may be timed ahead of the possible removal of another major comedy, "Seinfeld," from Netflix. Netflix's global rights to "Seinfeld," acquired from Sony in an expensive deal, are set to expire on October 1, 2026, unless renewed. Meanwhile, other beloved library series have also shifted; for example, "Gilmore Girls" left Netflix US on June 30, 2026, after 12 years, but remains available in Israel along with its sequel "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life."
In addition to these comedies, Netflix Israel has recently added or reinstated classic and popular series such as "ER," "Everwood," "Falling Skies," "Heroes," "Smallville," and "Home Improvement," among others. This broader content refresh highlights Netflix's renewed focus on securing beloved series from various studios to strengthen its competitive position in the Israeli streaming market.
