Traveler Wins $3.3 Million Playing Slot Machine at Las Vegas Airport
A traveler won $3.3 million on a slot machine at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas over the weekend after betting just $10 while waiting for a connecting flight. The gaming company International Game Technology (IGT) confirmed the win and congratulated the player on social media. Airport officials also publicly celebrated the winner on the social platform X, praising the lucky break during a layover and thanking the winner for making the airport part of their fortunate journey.
Harry Reid Airport features more than 1,400 slot machines and is one of only two commercial airports in the United States, alongside Reno-Tahoe International Airport, that allow gambling inside the terminals. Unlike most major U.S. airports that restrict gambling to nearby casinos, Harry Reid Airport has clusters of slot machines scattered throughout busy corridors, offering a mix of classic three-reel designs and high jackpot games.
Less than a year ago, another passenger won $384,500 on a slot machine at the same airport after betting only $1.25. Regarding taxation, U.S. gambling winnings over $5,000 are subject to an immediate 24% federal tax withholding, which rises to 30% for non-residents. Nevada does not impose state taxes on gambling winnings or personal income, so federal tax is the main deduction for American winners. For the $3.3 million jackpot, the estimated total tax rate is about 37%, leaving the winner with approximately $2.1 million after taxes.
