Jerusalem District Court Judge Criticizes Minister Nir Barkat Over Defamation Lawsuit Handling

Jerusalem District Court Judge Anat Zinger rejected Minister Nir Barkat's request to reinstate his defamation lawsuit and sharply criticized his conduct. The lawsuit, filed by Barkat against Channel 12 News, reporter Maayan Perati, and others, sought 2.8 million shekels in damages. Judge Zinger had dismissed the case on procedural grounds after both parties failed to inform the court about the results of a preliminary hearing they were supposed to hold earlier in the week.

In her ruling, Judge Zinger emphasized that as an elected official, Barkat is naturally subject to close scrutiny and media coverage. She advised that it would be appropriate not to revive the lawsuit and suggested Barkat reconsider whether there is any basis to continue it. The judge also criticized both sides for their failure to keep the court informed, stating that it is not the court's role to act as the parties' secretary.
