FBI Confirms Ransom Messages in Nancy Guthrie Case Are Fake, Investigation Continues

The FBI has determined that three ransom messages attributed to the kidnappers of Nancy Guthrie, mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, are forgeries unrelated to her disappearance. A senior FBI official told Reuters that two ransom letters sent in early February, along with a third message claiming knowledge of the kidnappers' identities, were all deemed inauthentic. This revelation casts doubt on the initial theory that Nancy Guthrie was abducted for ransom.

As part of the investigation, the FBI transferred a small amount of cryptocurrency to the address provided in the first ransom note to verify its legitimacy or trace the senders, but the funds were never withdrawn. Additional undisclosed findings led authorities to conclude that the letters were sent by someone unconnected to Guthrie's disappearance.

Despite this significant development, law enforcement emphasized that the investigation remains active. The Pima County Sheriff's Office stated that DNA samples and video evidence collected are still undergoing forensic analysis, with no further updates released so far.
