Ukrainian General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi Challenges President Zelensky in Upcoming Election
Tensions within Ukraine's leadership have escalated dramatically as former top military commander Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, known as the "Iron General," announced his readiness to run against President Volodymyr Zelensky in the upcoming presidential election this fall. Once symbols of national unity during the war, their relationship has deteriorated into deep mistrust and rivalry.
In exclusive interviews from London, Zaluzhnyi revealed that in September 2022, dozens of agents from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), loyal to Zelensky, raided his office, an event that made him feel threatened enough to consider calling in military forces for protection. Zaluzhnyi also criticized Zelensky's military leadership, blaming the president for the failure of the 2023 counteroffensive by interfering with operational plans and dispersing forces instead of focusing on a single breakthrough axis as recommended by military commanders.
The conflict peaked in February 2024 when Zelensky dismissed Zaluzhnyi from his military post and appointed him ambassador to the United Kingdom, a move widely seen as an attempt to sideline him politically. Despite this, polls indicate Zaluzhnyi remains Zelensky's strongest political rival. Zelensky continues to emphasize national unity and insists that political disputes are unnecessary during the ongoing war with Russia. However, Zaluzhnyi signals that his next major battle may be at the ballot box rather than the battlefield against Putin.
