Historic Renovation Begins at Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron with New Roof and Infrastructure
For the first time in history, extensive roofing and renovation work has commenced at the Cave of the Patriarchs complex in Hebron, following the transfer of planning and construction authority from the Hebron Municipality. The project includes installing a new ceiling, air conditioning, electrical systems, drainage, and lighting upgrades. The initiative was officially launched during a site visit led by Defense and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, alongside Settlement and National Missions Minister Orit Strook, representatives from the Settlement Administration, the Civil Administration, and local leaders.
The comprehensive upgrade aims to improve visitor conditions and preserve the site, which holds deep historical and religious significance. Smotrich emphasized the emotional and national importance of the project, stating, "There is no one in the Jewish people who is not filled with longing and love for the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, for the Cave of the Patriarchs, for our deep roots here in Hebron, and for our responsibility for this place." He thanked all involved parties, including the Settlement Administration, Civil Administration, Ministry of Defense construction division, and the IDF, as well as cooperation with former Defense Minister Israel Katz and local authorities.
Minister Strook highlighted the historical significance of the project, noting that for decades the site was treated as if it did not belong to them, and now the construction symbolizes ownership and responsibility. Municipal Administrator of Hebron, Eyal Gilman, remarked that the work follows over twenty years of efforts to advance the project, calling it a tribute to the founding fathers and mothers of the nation. Kiryat Arba Council Head Israel Barmason also praised the collaboration, describing the renovations as a historic change that will enhance infrastructure and improve conditions for worshippers and visitors year-round.
