Anonymous Note Helps Driver Win Nearly 73,000 Shekel Compensation for Hit-and-Run Damage
In March 2025, a female lawyer returned home to find her car scratched along its entire length. An anonymous note left on the windshield claimed a nearby construction site truck had hit the vehicle and fled without leaving contact details. The note included the truck's license plate number, and the driver’s identity was later confirmed by the construction site manager near the parking spot.
The plaintiff contacted the truck driver, who denied involvement, arguing that many trucks pass through the street and the anonymous note was unreliable. The lawyer, represented by attorney Uri Bachar, asserted in her lawsuit that the truck driver was solely responsible for the damage, stating the truck hit her parked car while driving recklessly and left the scene.
The truck driver and his insurer denied any accident or contact with the plaintiff’s vehicle, claiming the damages were exaggerated and unfounded. However, the Netanya Magistrate’s Court ruled fully in favor of the plaintiff. Judge Zohar Divon Segal found the plaintiff’s testimony credible, noting her professional integrity and lack of motive to falsify evidence. The judge accepted the anonymous note as valid evidence since it was written shortly after the incident by an eyewitness.
The court also dismissed the truck driver’s claim that the vehicle was in the garage for repairs at the time, highlighting the late and suspicious presentation of an unsigned invoice. Ultimately, the court held the truck driver responsible and ordered him and his insurer to pay approximately 73,000 shekels in damages, plus about 10,600 shekels in legal fees and court costs, including a 1,800 shekel court fee.
