Kawhi Leonard Returns to Toronto Raptors in Major NBA Trade
Kawhi Leonard has been traded back to the Toronto Raptors from the Los Angeles Clippers, marking one of the biggest NBA moves this summer. The Clippers decided not to extend Leonard's contract, which is worth $50 million for the upcoming season, and instead sent him to the Canadian team where he won the franchise's first-ever NBA championship in 2019. Leonard's return to Toronto comes after a single historic season with the Raptors, during which he averaged 26.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and earned the Finals MVP award for the second time in his career.
In exchange for Leonard, the Clippers received Brandon Ingram, Grady Dick, two future first-round draft picks, two second-round picks, and the right to swap picks. Leonard's tenure with the Clippers began in 2019 with high expectations alongside Paul George, but despite multiple playoff appearances, the team failed to secure a championship. Leonard suffered a major ACL injury in the 2021/22 season, sidelining him for the entire year. Although he returned to form with a career-high average of 27.9 points per game last season and received MVP votes, the Clippers finished with a 42-40 record, participated in the play-in tournament, and were eliminated by the Golden State Warriors before the playoffs.
Leonard previously won an NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, and his return to Toronto is seen as a significant move for both the player and the Raptors franchise.
