FIFA Declines to Investigate Controversial Austria-Algeria 3-3 World Cup Match

FIFA has decided not to open an investigation into the 3-3 draw between Austria and Algeria in the 2026 World Cup group stage. The match ended with Austria finishing second in Group J, tied on points with Algeria but advancing due to a superior goal difference. Algeria’s Riad Mahrez scored a dramatic equalizer in the 93rd minute, sparking allegations that Algeria allowed Austria to score the late equalizer, but FIFA found no grounds for an official inquiry.

The British newspaper Mirror reported that FIFA is unlikely to investigate the match and has no concerns about the result, which some have compared to the infamous 1982 World Cup "Disgrace of Gijón" where West Germany and Austria allegedly played a non-competitive match to eliminate Algeria. Ironically, Austria might have preferred finishing third, as second place sets up a difficult next-round match against European champions Spain, while Algeria will face Switzerland and could meet defending champions Argentina in the quarterfinals if victorious.

Austria’s coach Ralf Rangnick strongly rejected the match-fixing accusations, calling them "crazy." He described the final minutes as highly dramatic and unpredictable, saying, "If someone told me three minutes before the end that this would happen, I would have said they were crazy." Rangnick, who has coached for about 40 years, said the 3-3 result was unbelievable and compared the drama to a Hitchcock thriller. The controversy highlights the tension and unpredictability of World Cup group stage outcomes.
