Israel Grants Official Recognition to Four West Bank Settlements, Advancing Infrastructure Development
The Israeli Ministry of Interior officially recognized four additional settlements in the West Bank on Tuesday, concluding a years-long process for these communities that had previously operated without formal status. The newly recognized settlements are Asif (Nofei Nehemia) in the Shomron Regional Council, established 24 years ago; Malakhi HaShalom in the Mateh Binyamin Regional Council, founded 11 years ago and recognized earlier this year in February; Avia (Shdema) and Yitav, both in the Gush Etzion and Jordan Valley Regional Councils respectively, recognized in December 2023.
This recognition follows extensive coordination between the Civil Administration, the Settlement Administration at the Ministry of Defense, and the Central Command led by Major General Avi Blot, who signed the jurisdictional boundaries for the settlements. Receiving official settlement symbols marks a critical milestone, granting these communities full governmental recognition and enabling access to essential services such as postal delivery, water connection through Mekorot, and official security personnel allocation.
Finance Minister and Religious Zionism leader Bezalel Smotrich praised the move as a significant achievement, highlighting that 37 settlement symbols have been granted in the past six months as part of efforts to establish new settlements and regularize young communities. Smotrich framed the expansion as a response to opposition aiming to dismantle settlements and establish a Palestinian state, emphasizing the government's commitment to strengthening Jewish presence in the ancestral homeland.
The recognition is expected to facilitate infrastructure development and improve living conditions in these settlements, some of which have struggled for years without formal status or government support. This step aligns with ongoing Israeli policies to consolidate and expand settlement activity in the West Bank.
