Israeli Hostage Survivors Omri Miran and Alon Ahal Speak Out at Eastern Galilee Conference
At the 11th Eastern Galilee Conference held by the University of Tel Hai in Kiryat Shmona, Israeli former hostages Omri Miran and Alon Ahal, along with their fathers Danny Miran and Kobi Ahal, shared their experiences and reflections. Omri Miran criticized Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for claiming credit for their release, noting Smotrich did not support the prisoner exchange deal. Miran emphasized the ongoing threat from Gaza, recalling recent marches toward Israeli forces and stating, "These enemies must be destroyed; this must never happen again, neither near Gaza nor in the north."
Miran also recounted the psychological challenges during captivity, including false claims by his captor that his family had abandoned him. He is currently volunteering in Sderot on a project providing psychological support to families affected by conflict. Miran highlighted the political divisions in Israel before October 7, 2023, warning that the election year demands new language and norms to restore acceptance and liberal values.
Danny Miran expressed relief seeing his granddaughters happy after a difficult period and announced his leadership of the Pensioners' Party, focusing on improving welfare for elderly citizens, single-parent families, and Holocaust survivors. Meanwhile, Alon Ahal spoke about his ongoing recovery, especially coping with eye injuries, and praised the unifying power of music in his rehabilitation. His father, Kobi Ahal, acknowledged the long and complex healing journey ahead, emphasizing the need for continued support.
The event underscored the personal and national challenges faced by former hostages and their families, calling for unity and resilience amid ongoing security threats and political tensions in Israel.
