Pro-Palestinian Protests Target Israeli Travelers at Sardinia Airport Amid Local Support
In recent weeks, Israeli travelers arriving in Sardinia have faced hostile receptions from dozens of pro-Palestinian activists at the airport. These protesters, who waved Palestinian flags and shouted slogans against Israel, were reportedly allowed by police to enter the terminal area, surrounding and filming the Israeli passengers. Several travelers described the experience as uncomfortable and unsettling upon arrival.
Despite these protests, Israeli residents on the island report a more nuanced reality. Ayelet Gutman, an Israeli living in Cagliari, told n12 that while a vocal minority protests against Israel, many locals express support and warmth toward Israelis and Jews. Since October 7, she noted increased concern from local friends about her family’s wellbeing and the situation in Israel. Sardinia also hosts an active Jewish community that holds gatherings, Shabbat services, and events attended by supportive locals interested in Jewish culture.
Following the demonstrations, Mario Carboni, founder of the local Jewish community, appealed to government officials to address the issue. The local transport minister responded by initiating meetings with relevant authorities. Concurrently, a group of Israelis, Jews, and Israel supporters received permission to welcome Israeli tourists at the airport, aiming to provide a sense of security, accompany travelers if needed, and offer guidance during protests or verbal harassment.
Gutman emphasized that the protesters do not represent the majority of Sardinians and reassured that Israelis visiting the island can find a supportive and welcoming community. She stated, "There is a warm and loving home here for every Israeli who comes to the city, students, tourists, and families alike."
