Andrey Rublev Upset in First Round of Wimbledon as Sinner and Djokovic Prepare Title Defenses
The Wimbledon tennis tournament began on Monday with a major upset as Andrey Rublev, ranked 13th in the world, was eliminated in the first round by Roman Safiullin, ranked 132nd, after a grueling five-set match lasting four hours, including a lengthy super tiebreak. This surprising result came shortly after the Roland Garros tournament concluded three weeks ago, which also featured numerous surprises.
Top-seeded players are now in focus, including Yannick Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Aryna Sabalenka. Sinner, who was knocked out in the second round of the French Open, is aiming to defend his Wimbledon title won last year, seeking his fifth Grand Slam. He will face Miomir Kecmanovic, ranked 51st, who has lost all four previous encounters against Sinner.
Novak Djokovic, currently ranked seventh, has won seven of his 24 Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and is one victory away from tying Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles. At 39 years old, Djokovic is pursuing his 25th Grand Slam title and will open against Chinese player Eving Wu, ranked 99th.
Other notable first-round matches include Daniil Medvedev (8th) versus Marin Cilic (62nd), Felix Auger-Aliassime (3rd) against Alexander Shevchenko (98th), and Casper Ruud (11th) facing Hubert Hurkacz. On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka, who lost the Australian Open final and was ousted in the Roland Garros quarterfinals, is aiming for her fifth Grand Slam title and first Wimbledon final. She will play Serbian 19-year-old Teodora Kostovic in her opening match.
Jessica Pegula (4th) rebounded from a first-round French Open exit with a straight-sets win over Daria Vidmanova (92nd). Other women’s first-round matches include 19-year-old Mira Andreeva (5th) versus Magda Linette (59th), Coco Gauff (7th) against Tamara Korpatsch (79th), and Naomi Osaka (14th) facing Elsa Jacquemot. The tournament promises intense competition as top players seek to claim or defend prestigious Grand Slam titles on the grass courts of Wimbledon.
