Israeli Entrepreneurs Share Growth Stories and Challenges at Calcalist-Mizrahi Tefahot Conference
At the recent Calcalist and Mizrahi Tefahot Growth Conference, leading Israeli entrepreneurs discussed the evolving landscape of entrepreneurship and brand building. The panel featured Ofek Targash, founder of the dietary supplements company GOOM; Rozhet Chinawi, owner and chair of the Chinawi beverage group; and Shay Kopel-Planer, co-CEO of the jewelry company Ronit Yam.
Ofek Targash revealed that GOOM, founded during military reserve duty, has experienced extraordinary growth, with annual revenues in the tens of millions and a 1,400% increase last year. He credited the reserve service as a motivational boost that gave him and his partner courage to take risks. Targash emphasized their direct-to-consumer online sales model, avoiding retail chains to maintain product quality and customer experience, despite rising advertising costs.
Shay Kopel-Planer discussed the family business origins of Ronit Yam, which recently sold 51% of the company to Fox Group. She expressed confidence in the partnership, highlighting the importance of corporate backing to support handcrafted jewelry production and manage growing customer demand. Kopel-Planer stressed the need to preserve the brand’s identity and artistic passion amid corporate involvement.
Rozhet Chinawi shared insights from the long-established Chinawi beverage group, which evolved from a flagship store selling wine and brandy to a chain of 12 stores offering unique wines and tastings. While acknowledging the importance of physical retail for customer experience, Chinawi also noted ongoing digital developments and diversification, including selling meat products in some stores. She emphasized the family’s continued involvement and openness to investment for further expansion.
The entrepreneurs also discussed challenges such as the high cost of shelf space in retail chains, the importance of maintaining brand DNA, and balancing growth with preserving company values. Targash confirmed they have received acquisition offers but remain committed to their premium product identity. Chinawi reflected on the company’s pyramid structure, with owners supporting management and customers from behind the scenes.
The panel highlighted the dynamic changes in Israeli entrepreneurship, blending tradition with innovation and the critical role of motivation, partnerships, and strategic growth decisions.
