Russian Hackers Cause $2.5 Billion Cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover in UK
An extensive international investigation has identified a Russian hacking group as responsible for a massive cyberattack on British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), causing approximately $2.5 billion in damages and halting production lines. The attack, which began on August 31, 2025, started with a simple vishing (voice phishing) scam where attackers impersonated company employees to gain access credentials, including administrative accounts. This allowed them to infiltrate JLR's internal IT systems, disrupt critical operations, and stop production at multiple factories in the UK and other countries by September 1.
The probe involved cooperation between the FBI, the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), the UK National Cyber Security Centre, and major tech firms such as Microsoft, Google (via Mandiant), and Palo Alto Networks. Despite the extensive evidence, investigators have not determined whether the hackers acted directly under Kremlin orders, independently, or with tacit approval from Russian authorities. The cyberattack affected over 5,000 organizations in JLR's supply chain and was linked by the Bank of England to a slowdown in the UK's GDP growth.
In response, the British government intervened with an unprecedented £1.5 billion aid package to stabilize the automotive supply chain and prevent further industrial collapse. The investigation also uncovered a separate breach by an independent Jordanian hacker within JLR's digital infrastructure, highlighting the complexity and vulnerability of large corporate networks. Early claims by a group called "Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters" taking responsibility were later dismissed as a diversion.
JLR's parent company, Tata Motors, has yet to comment officially on the findings. The incident underscores the growing threat posed by combining simple social engineering tactics with advanced cyber intrusion capabilities, and it is expected to remain a focus for governments, cybersecurity firms, and corporations worldwide.
