Entrepreneur Matan Yaffe Builds Bridges Across Israeli Divides Through Street Dialogue
Matan Yaffe, a 41-year-old entrepreneur and father of five, has embarked on a unique mission to engage with Israelis from diverse and often opposing backgrounds through his social media project "Explain to Me." Selling his home and exhausting his savings, Yaffe meets people in streets, squares, bars, and protests, asking them to explain their views in an effort to bridge political and social divides.
Yaffe's journey began with a traumatic experience as a young armor officer during the 2006 Lebanon War, where he lost comrades and grew disillusioned with Israeli leadership. After military service, a transformative encounter with a Lebanese refugee barber in Sydney, Australia, deepened his commitment to Israel as not just his birthplace but his existential mission. Returning to Israel, a violent confrontation with Bedouin youths in the Negev, where Yaffe drew a gun to defend himself, initially fueled anger but ultimately inspired him to found "Desert Stars," a leadership program integrating thousands of Bedouin youth into Israeli society.
His work expanded to the ultra-Orthodox community, where since 2020 he has met rabbis and residents to understand internal challenges, highlighting the tension between leadership and ordinary people, especially regarding military service and civic rights. As founder of the political-ideological movement "To the Flag," Yaffe advocates for fair national service obligations balanced with respect for Torah study, emphasizing that those who opt out of service should forfeit state benefits.
Yaffe also confronted institutional antisemitism during his graduate studies at Harvard University, where he legally challenged the university after a professor barred him from writing about Israel, resulting in Harvard adopting stricter antisemitism definitions. The October 2023 war further shaped his worldview; serving in the reserves in Gaza, he witnessed national unity amid conflict but returned to political cynicism at home, deepening his resolve to promote meaningful leadership.
Despite personal sacrifices, including financial strain and limited family time, Yaffe remains committed to fostering practical solutions for Israel's future beyond partisan disputes. His story reflects a generation seeking connection and leadership, urging a shift from conflict over correctness to collaborative problem-solving for the nation's survival.
