Golden State Warriors Pursue Anthony Davis Trade to Attract LeBron James in Free Agency
The Golden State Warriors are actively pursuing a major roster overhaul this summer, aiming to trade for Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards and subsequently sign LeBron James as a free agent. According to multiple NBA sources, the Warriors' proposed trade for Davis would require including Jimmy Butler, who is in the final year of his $57 million contract and recovering from an ACL tear. Additionally, Golden State would need to offer draft assets, including two future first-round picks and four pick swap rights.
The Warriors believe acquiring Davis could convince LeBron James to leave the Los Angeles Lakers and join a star-studded lineup featuring Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Davis under coach Steve Kerr. This reunion of LeBron and Davis, who previously won a championship together with the Lakers, aims to contend for another NBA title. However, the Lakers have yet to offer LeBron a contract extension, and if he chooses to continue playing, he might have to sign elsewhere, possibly on a mid-level exception deal worth around $15 million per season. LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, stated that "10 to 12 teams" have expressed interest in signing James, keeping the possibility of a sign-and-trade open.
Despite these ambitions, obstacles remain. The Wizards have publicly stated their intention to keep Davis, with GM Will Dawkins emphasizing Davis’s desire to stay. Davis is eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension starting August 6, but a trade before then would delay his ability to sign a maximum contract by six months, offering no immediate benefit to him. Butler, recovering from injury, has expressed willingness to remain with Golden State but accepts a trade if the team believes it will help them win sooner.
Golden State has previously attempted to acquire several stars, including Paul George, Lauri Markkanen, Pascal Siakam, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kawhi Leonard, without success. Now, the Warriors are trying to assemble one of the oldest star lineups in NBA history. Whether this ambitious plan materializes or remains a bold attempt is yet to be seen.
