Trump Threatens Federal Takeover of Washington DC Over Incoming Socialist Mayor

US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Janice Lewis George, the socialist Democrat poised to become mayor of Washington DC. In a forceful statement on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump labeled Lewis George a "communist" and vowed to block any policies she pursues that would reduce law enforcement or empty prisons. He warned that if necessary, the federal government would revoke the city's autonomy and manage it directly.

Trump condemned Lewis George's plans to dismantle jails, turn Washington into a sanctuary city for undocumented immigrants, oppose immigration enforcement agencies, protect criminal migrants, and eliminate cash bail laws. He claimed these measures would undermine public safety and erase his administration's crime reduction achievements in the capital.

The president highlighted his efforts to make Washington "the envy of the world" with near-zero crime and said he would not allow the city to be "ruined by a communist sympathizer." He also mentioned plans to meet with Lewis George soon but issued a stern warning that the city must remain safe and prosperous.

Lewis George won the Democratic primary decisively earlier this month, positioning her to replace incumbent Mayor Muriel Bowser in a heavily Democratic city. Her victory sets up a direct confrontation with Trump, who has made combating crime and reshaping the capital a key goal of a potential second term. Trump has already deployed National Guard troops in Washington and previously threatened to federalize the city’s governance.

Lewis George has criticized Trump’s deployment of federal forces as a political attack on residents and has opposed curfews and harsh federal law enforcement. Instead, she advocates for expanding youth programs, community investments, and police budget cuts.
