Rabbi Chen Chalmish Publishes 'War Diary' Reflecting on Spirit and Soldiers in Israel's Conflicts
Rabbi Chen Chalmish, head of the Jerusalem Beit Midrash, has released a new book titled 'Ki Im Beruchi' ('Only by My Spirit'), which serves as a war diary and a reflection on the spiritual dimension of Israel's recent conflicts. In the book's introduction, Chalmish recounts his months spent in combat zones and training fields, engaging with thousands of soldiers and commanders to explore the role of spirit and faith in warfare. He describes how he paused his writing to be present on the front lines, stating, "That is my role."
The book emerged from numerous articles and discussions with soldiers across various sectors, aiming to clarify the fundamental values of Israel's wars in clear language and a tone of sovereignty. It includes four parts: theoretical essays on army and war, brief biblical military discussions, five lesson plans related to Operation 'With the Lion,' and a final section resembling a war diary focused on the spiritual battle. Chalmish also reflects on the names of the recent conflict, "Swords of Iron" and "War of Rebellion," finding renewed meaning in them through study of the Ramchal's writings.
Chalmish emphasizes that the war is not only existential but a battle for the original Israeli spirit, asserting that understanding this spiritual war strengthens Israel's resilience and leads to victory. He also acknowledges the pain of fallen soldiers and honors the wounded as true heroes. The book was written during and after Operation "Swords of Iron," with the Jerusalem Beit Midrash closed for over four months as all graduates enlisted.
This publication highlights the ongoing effort since Operation Cast Lead to bolster soldiers' morale in assembly areas, command posts, and battle zones, reflecting a collective spiritual mission alongside military operations. Rabbi Chalmish's work offers a unique perspective on the intertwining of faith, national identity, and military service in Israel's recent wars.
